Land and Environmental Art

This portfolio explores how the tradition of painted landscapes was radically transformed in the 1960s when some artists stopped merely representing the land but made their mark directly onto the environment itself. Land and Environmental Art can take many forms - as a temporary arrangement of natural materials found in a location, as a performance within a landscape, or as a more permanent sculpture that is designed to merge with the changing environment around it.

These artworks often deal with themes and ideas about man and nature, especially in regard to ecology and the way that man has manipulated and abused his natural surroundings. Going beyond the politics of the environment, the work, like traditional landscape painting, often seeks to tap into gander themes about earth, nature, the universe and our place within this system.
